Just for fun: suggest a name for our baby

Well, our baby should be here very soon, but while we wait I thought it might be fun to see what all of you thought about baby names; more specifically names for a boy.

This one is already out:

NB: We have ended our partnership with Zazzle. Please visit our new store, Classical Geek.

We have our own short list, and to the consternation of our families are keeping the names secret. If you have a suggestion–serious, clever, humorous, Classical, or otherwise–please leave a comment.

Without your help we may resort to Sortes Virgilianae (or perhaps Homericae).

  1. Please don’t name the baby Sortes or Homericae!! A lifetime of torment will await my handsome nephew to be!! A nice normal name please, like Charlie……how about Benjamin,or Jacob?? I always liked James or Matthew also…….it’s so hard to pick boys names!

  2. Murtagh mchenry – muir “sea” and ceardach “skilled” implying “skilled in the ways of the sea.” The name of three High Kings and one of the greatest Irish military commanders known as “Murtagh of the Leather Cloak,” he set out in mid-winter, wearing leather cloaks against the bitter cold, and turned back the maurauding Vikings. He beat the invaders in a sea battle on Strangford Lough in 926, took and burned Viking Dublin in 939, ravaged the Norse settlements in the Scottish Isles with an Ulster fleet in 941 and died in combat in 943, presumably wearing all his cloaks

  3. Okay, I don’t think I can beat Murtagh McHenry, but here are a couple for your consideration:

Astyanax, Ascanius, Iulus, Caligula (questionable, I know, but I’m thinking of the cute little tot who stomped around in too-big army boots), Dennis III, and Henry (come on, Henry McHenry, so cool!)

  4. how about take a family name…like the wifes maiden last name and change it up a bit. I don’t know.. some sort of old family name would be cool. Names that aren’t used much anymore… somebody from your grandparents generation. I wish I had been given my grandmothers first name – Leola, but no…..
